The Newport Transporter Bridge located in Newport, South Wales spans the River Usk and is a Grade 1 Listed Building which was opened in September 1906. Its historic importance stems from it being recognised as the finest and largest Transporter Bridge in Britain. There are only two others like it in the UK and six working examples left in the world. It is owned and run by Newport City Council and celebrated its centenary in September 2006.
Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge (FONTB) was founded in 1998 as a registered Charity and is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Bridge.
The Transporter Bridge is currently undergoing an exciting programme of restoration including the creation of a brand new visitor centre. Whilst we wait to get back on site the Friends role is to promote and support a range of activities including events, publishing a regular Newsletter, giving presentations and maintaining an archive.
You can help support the Friends by donating, becoming a Friend, or by volunteering time to help with fundraising.
